Henry Toledano was born in Meknes, Morocco, a descendant of a long line of rabbis and scholars, where he attended traditional (though Ashkenazi) Yeshivot. He immigrated to the United States in 1953. He received his B.A. from Wayne State University in 1959 and his Ph.D. in Hebrew and Arabic literature and Islamic civilization from Columbia University in 1969.
